Eric Cummings is a Diamond Champion!
In July we nominated Eric Cummings for the Royal Voluntary Service Diamond Champions Award. The Awards, launched in 2012, as an official Diamond Jubilee Project, celebrate the fantastic contribution older people like Eric offer the community and the difference they make to the lives of others.
Eric, who is 69 and has been with the organisation for almost 10 years, was nominated for his work as a Volunteer Advocate. By providing Advocacy Eric ensures those with mental health issues have a stronger voice and have as much control as possible over their own lives and any decisions involving their care.
Eric is also heavily involved with the training of our other Volunteers and helps every one of them through the practical stage of ‘shadowing’. Eric provides these Volunteers with valuable experience for not only their volunteering but in their future career as health professionals.
Thankfully, the judges agreed with our nomination and have chosen Eric as a 2013 Diamond Champion for his ‘outstanding work’. Over 2,100 nominees were put forward for the Award with Eric named one of just sixty Diamond Champions from across the Country.
In honour of his achievement, Eric will shortly receive a special Diamond Champion Pin Badge and a Certificate signed by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall acknowledging that he has been named a Diamond Champion for 2013.
On hearing of his success, our Project Manager, Walter Southall, had this to say:
‘Eric cares greatly for those who suffer with mental illness, always treating them with dignity and respect; he is an asset to our organisation and the local community.
He is well known throughout the hospital for his compassion and energy and is well respected by both his peers and those he supports. Eric’s devotion and commitment and his involvement with training new Volunteers have led to the success of our organisation’.
